Intraoral Scanners

What is an Intraoral Scanner?

An intraoral scanner is a device used to create detailed 3D images of a patient’s mouth. The scanner uses a handheld wand that is moved around the mouth and quickly and precisely records the shape, size, and structure of the teeth and gums. The images are stitched together by the software and create a 3D model of the patient’s mouth. In the past, impressions of a patient’s mouth were required for treatment. This process often got messy and time consuming. The intraoral scanner eliminates the need for any goop and leaves your mouth as clean as when the procedure began. This technology helps us give patients the most accurate results available.

What happens after the scan?

Once a scan is complete, Dr. Defoe reviews the images and models to create a plan for treatment. The 3D images and models are also processed by the lab for patients who are being treated using clear aligners.

How long does teeth scanning take?

Intraoral scanners can capture dental images in under 10 minutes. This is a significant reduction in time when compared to the older method of taking impressions using goop and trays.
